Darren Fleet has come a long way from walking the halls of Warren County Schools and posting hilarious videos on YouTube. Nowadays, he’s traveling the country hitting comedy clubs, appearing on improv shows, and sharing his comedic pop culture rants to his fan base of over 2 million followers!

If you’ve been waiting for him to appear on a stage near us, you’re in luck! Fleet’s bringing his brand of standup to Goodnights Comedy in Raleigh on Wednesday, October 30.

This week, Governor Roy Cooper announced the 2024-2025 application period for the North Carolina Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award is underway. The award, passed by Congress in 2019 and overseen by the U.S. Department of Education, honors classified school employees who provide exemplary service.

“School employees are the backbone of our education system,” says Governor Cooper. “They work tirelessly behind the scenes to support students, teachers, and families. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes of North Carolina schools and the crucial work that they do every day.”

For the purposes of the award, a classified school employee is defined as an employee of a state or any political subdivision of a state, or an employee of a nonprofit entity, who works in any grade from pre-kindergarten through high school in any of the following occupational specialties: paraprofessional, clerical and administrative services, transportation services, food and nutrition services, custodial and maintenance services, security services, health and student services, technical services, and skilled trades.

Award winners demonstrate excellence in the following areas: (A) Work performance; (B) School and community involvement; (C) Leadership and commitment; (D) Local support (from co-workers, school administrators, community members, etc., who speak to the nominee’s exemplary work); (E) Enhancement of classified school employees’ image in the community and schools.

Public school units, school administrators, professional associations, labor organizations, educational service agencies, nonprofit entities, private schools and their representatives, parents, and students may nominate by September 30.

The two winners in North Carolina will be nominated to the U.S. Department of Education by November 1st. The U.S. Secretary of Education will select a single classified school employee from among the nominees to receive the RISE Award in the spring. The Office of the Governor of North Carolina will honor nominees and finalists. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education will recognize the honoree and communicate their story in order to inspire excellence among classified school employees.

The Warren County Memorial Library will host the “Oasis Spaces: North Carolina Green Book Project, 1933-1966” exhibit through January 31st. The exhibit is made possible through a partnership with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources as part of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission.

The exhibit reflects the Heritage Commission’s research about “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which identified business that in essence served as “oasis spaces” for African American travelers during the time of segregation. The book was both a travel guide and a tool of resistance designed to confront the realities of racial discrimination in the United States and beyond. It listed over 300 North Carolina businesses including restaurants, hotels, tourist homes, nightclubs and beauty salons.

“We are pleased to present this exhibit for the community to explore a part of history that has been overlooked,” said Library Director Christy Bondy.

The library has several programs planned that accompany the exhibit including film screenings, and a virtual visit with author, Calvin Ramsey.

The Green Book Project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Warren County Government is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) from local non-profit and faith-based organizations to provide local community support services for those residents in need of temporary or emergency assistance due to housing instability or homelessness.

Since there is not currently a permanent facility in the county offering sheltering services and other supports, this Housing Instability Small Grants Pilot Program will allow local organizations to provide some basic services to help those that are in need. Warren County grant funds through Eastpointe LME/MCO will be used to offer some additional support services to combat housing instability or homelessness.

The following entities may submit a proposal for consideration:
Well-established community & faith-based organizations defined as being in operation for a minimum of three (3) years and qualifying for exemption under Section 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), or 501(c)(6) of the IRS code.
Partnerships with local churches, non-profits or other community-based organizations are encouraged. Such collaborations shall be given high priority for funding.

The timeline for the Request for Proposals is as follows:
October 24, 2022: Opening date to receive requests
October 31, 2022: Deadline to submit questions
November 18, 2022: Deadline to submit proposals by 5:00 pm
November 28, 2022: Funds awarded for approved requests

The RFP packet will be released on October 24th and can be retrieved online at www.warrencountync.com or picked up from the Warren County Government Administrative Office located at 602 W. Warren County Community and Economic Development Director, Charla Duncan was recently named a Trailblazer in the October edition of Business North Carolina Magazine.

In a feature piece titled, Trailblazers: 20 young leaders focused on improving the state’s smaller cities, this acknowledgement focuses on identifying and recognizing thriving business owners and professionals under the age of 40 who work in NC cities and towns that have fewer than 100,000 residents.

Business North Carolina received nominations through July 15, 2022 for leaders who were under the age of 40 as of June 30, 2022. Nominations included short statements supporting these influential business leaders, citing key accomplishments in the last two years and basic biographical information including age, title, hometown, and number of years spent in their current community.

In her profile, Duncan (36) revealed what she believes what makes the Warren County community so special:

Warren County is a bold community dedicated to building a bright future for all who live here. We are fearless and undaunted by hard work. We are a community of creative, innovative and entrepreneurial spirits.

She also named Harry Mills, Granville County Economic Development Director as a mentor and friend who has served as “a big inspiration and help” for her.
