Warren County Health Department was among ten local health departments that were accredited by the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation (NCLHDA) Board on November 21, 2025. The health department’s Accreditation Team traveled to Raleigh to participate in the meeting with the state board which included responding to questions from the board about their agency and services. Wes Gray, the Site Visit Team Lead shared highlights from their visit to Warren County and identified best practice programs implemented by the health department. The accreditation period is from November 21, 2025 – November 21, 2029.

“Congratulations to each health department who has newly completed an accreditation cycle. Accreditation is a quality improvement process to assure that core public health services are provided in all North Carolina counties and add value in local communities. The accreditation process requires teamwork and dedication from health department staff, Boards of Health members, peer site visitors, and Accreditation Board members, all working together to identify, clarify, verify, and amplify the quality work taking place across our state. Each of these agencies has demonstrated their ability to maintain and/or exceed the thorough standards established by the NCLHDA Program. Well done!” comments Margaret Benson Nemitz, NC Local Health Department Accreditation Administrator.

Warren County Health Department was one of seven agencies that achieved “Accreditation with Honors.” The department successfully achieved 146 out of 147 required activities reviewed during the accreditation process. This honorary designation was implemented for the first time in Fall of 2017 to recognize agencies that especially excelled in their accreditation assessment by missing one or less activities within each of five standards set by the NCLHDA Program. Since its inception, this is the second time that Warren County Health Department has received Accreditation with Honors. Dr. Margaret Brake, Health Director stated “I am extremely proud of our entire staff whose dedication and hard work are why we are successful in our mission of protecting and improving the health of all of our residents. I also express my appreciation to our county administration, Board of Health, commissioners and community partners who support and contribute to our public health efforts.”

North Carolina was the first state in the country to mandate accreditation for its local health departments in 2005. The process of accreditation includes three major components – a self-assessment completed by the agency, a site visit by a multidisciplinary team of peers to review performance standards, and a determination of accreditation status by an independent Accreditation Board comprised of state and local public health officials, Board of Health members, County Commissioners, and at large members.

The NC Local Health Department Accreditation Program is administered by the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (part of the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) through collaboration with the North Carolina Association of Local Health Directors.

The Warren County Health Department, the Warren County Memorial Library and local partners gathered on May 29th for a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the placement of a Naloxone Vending Machine outside the library.

The newspaper box style vending machine is available 24 hours each day and includes an instructional video as well as risk reduction supplies such as Naloxone, fentanyl/xylazine testing strips, medication lockboxes, etc. Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is the opioid overdose reversal medication that has proven results saving the lives of individuals who have overdosed from opioid drugs.

Guest speakers were Dr. Margaret Brake, Health Director, Tanika Alston, Library Director and Chris Tucker, Emergency Services Director. Brittley Harris, Health Educator at the health department highlighted the supplies displayed in vending machine and described their use. Supporting partners participating in the ceremony included representatives from Warren County Government, Emergency Medical Services, Sheriff’s Office, Detention Center, Parks & Recreation, Trillium Health Resources, and Wilson County Substance Prevention Coalition.

Alston in her remarks stated, “We are excited to be part of this initiative aimed at preventing overdose deaths and creating a healthier community for everyone.”

In addition, the Health Department also provides the ONEbox™ emergency overdose reversal kits containing two doses of the opioid reversal medication, Naloxone to local organizations, businesses, churches and county government offices. This will enable anyone in those places to administer naloxone quickly and safely to a person overdosing in an effort to save their life.

If your business, church or organization is interested in receiving the ONEbox™, please call (252) 257-6017. Health Department staff also provide training on how to use the kit.

ABOUT ONEbox™

ONEbox™ (Opioid Naloxone Emergency Box) is a self-contained, video-enabled opioid overdose reversal kit intended to contain two doses of the opioid reversal medication Naloxone, along with personal protective equipment and video instruction (in English and Spanish) that are activated when ONEbox™ is opened. ONEbox™ was invented by West Virginia native and entrepreneur, Joe Murphy who created the box after seeing the devastation the opioid crisis caused in his hometown community in Huntington, West Virginia.

Both the free vending machine supplies and the ONEbox™ are available to the community thanks to a grant partnership with Wilson County Substance Prevention Coalition.

“We are pleased that our local partners support Naloxone Training and access for populations most at-risk for overdose.” We also recognize the importance of having access to the right tools at the right time to help in preventing an overdose,” said Dr. Brake. Awareness has never been more critical.” Chris Tucker noted that, “anyone is susceptible to overdose, not just those individuals’ experiencing addiction to drugs. Deaths from overdose are preventable through the timely administration of Naloxone/Narcan and appropriate response to overdose situations.”

Anyone interested in receiving FREE training on Overdose Prevention, Naloxone/Narcan administration and Hands-Only CPR can attend a 2-hour training on Tuesday, June 24th at the Warren County Emergency Services Building.

Please contact Chris Tucker (252) 257-1191 or Rhonda Mushaw (252) 257-6012 for more information and to register. Naloxone/Narcan will be available to those individuals who participate in the training.

In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month 2025, the Warren County Health Department, Department of Social Services, and Child Fatality Team joined forces with Positive Childhood Alliance NC (PCANC) and partners statewide to amplify this year’s theme: “Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention.”

This important campaign highlights a collective vision: every child and family deserves to live a purposeful, joyful life—filled with opportunity and hope for the future. Prevention starts with ensuring families have access to the support, resources, and community connections they need to thrive.

Prioritizing Prevention for Stronger Families

“Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and every family deserves the support to build a strong foundation for their children,” said Dr. Margaret F. Brake, Health Director for Warren County. “It takes all of us—from business leaders to educators to community advocates—to create environments where children can reach their full potential.”

Community Events That Brought Awareness to Action

Throughout April, Warren County led a series of events to engage residents and raise awareness about child abuse prevention:

💙 “Go Blue” Day – April 4, 2025
Residents and local government staff wore blue, the official color of Child Abuse Prevention Month, in a show of solidarity. Photos and prevention messages flooded social media as a visible reminder of the community’s commitment to protecting children.

📚 Lunch & Learn: Understanding ACEs
Hosted by the Warren County Child Fatality Team, a Lunch & Learn event was held at Warren County Memorial Library on April 4. Jessica Fowler, a featured guest speaker, presented on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their long-term impacts on health and well-being. Thirty-five attendees participated, learning how ACEs can be addressed through trauma-informed care and community support.

🌱Pinwheel Planting
Pinwheels, a national symbol of childlike joy and safety, were planted at the entrances of the Health Department and Department of Social Services. The display served as a reminder that all children deserve to grow up in safe, nurturing environments where they can flourish.

Building a Brighter Future for Warren County’s Children

Warren County’s observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month is a local part of a larger movement to prevent child maltreatment, promote protective factors, and foster healthy childhoods across North Carolina.

Together, we can help families before a challenge becomes a crisis—because prevention is possible, and hope is powerful.

Farmers markets provide an excellent opportunity to meet local farmers, ask questions, and purchase directly from the source.

During the last season, one item in particular that became an instant fave was the Jimmy Red Grits from Bender Farms. His grits have not only reached homes near and far, but also made its way to the latest menu at Blue Jay Bistro in Littleton, NC.
