These two organizations share a common thread: cultivating and encouraging youth literacy.

For the second year in a row and in its commitment to building literacy consciousness through book reading and storytelling, the Heritage Quilters Giving Circle, a diverse group of quilting artists from Warren and Vance counties, donated children’s books to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.- Rho Tau Omega Chapter.

The sorority received five copies each of The 1619 Project: Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renee Watson and The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem For the Country by Amanda Gorman.

The 1619 Project: Born on the Water, recommended reading of ages 7 to 10 years, tells the story of a young student‘s assignment to create a family tree and learns from her Grandmama the ancestors’ history that goes back to 1619.

Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman read The Hill We Climb at the inaugural of President Joe Biden. The poem calls for unity and justice, through both reckoning with the nation’s past and looking toward its future. It is recommended reading for all.

When asked why those specific books were chosen, Heritage Quilters Giving Circle president, Jereann King Johnson acknowledged the cultural and historic significance and relevance of each selection. She singled out Gorman’s book because it highlighted the accomplishments of a young writer and believed it would be relevant to young Warren County readers.

Organized in 2001, the Heritage Quilters and their love for the quilting arts have catapulted them to being recognized as a philanthropic organization that, with their skills and artistic vision, have allowed them to provide scholarships for area college-bound students, fund summer field trips, maintain a historic house in Warren County, North Carolina, and conduct Mathematics-based curriculum workshops for elementary-aged students.

In memory of Rhasheed Wheeler, his mother, Shantae Williams is currently accepting applicants for the Rhasheed Wheeler Inc annual scholarship. Details provided below.

The Rhasheed Wheeler Scholarship is a minority scholarship for African American males. It was founded in the year of 2020 in memory of Rhasheed Ricardo Wheeler, a high school student at Warren County High School. The purpose of The Rhasheed Wheeler Scholarship is to promote growth, and economic development.

Rhasheed gained his wings to heaven on May 26, 2020 in an ATV accident. Rhasheed finished his high school senior year on December 13, 2019 and was due for his graduation ceremony on May 30, 2020. He was an ambitious young man that enjoyed playing basketball, spending time with friends and family, and was interested in starting his own business. Rhasheed had a heart of gold and a smile that could captures anyone’s attention.

QUALIFICATIONS
* Must be an African American male
* Must be a student at Warren County High School or Warren New Tech School
* Must be attending a 2- or 4-year college or trade school for a Business degree (Business Management, Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing or Finance)

AWARD
* minimum $500 and can be used for tuition, books, computers, or any of the student’s college needs

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Student will be required to write a 500-word essay on the following topic: “What does being an African American male mean to me, and how can I contribute to making a positive change in society?”

Submit your essay and unofficial transcript by 12AM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 via email to rhasheedscholarship@gmail.com. Upon receipt, the applicant will receive a confirmation email followed by an ID number associated with your essay entry.

Crystal Boyd is a counselor for Warren New Tech High School and loved by all her students including Warren County High School students. Ma “Mrs Boyd got me” was a regular conversation among me and Rhasheed lol….thank you Mrs Boyd for having him! We see all you do and we appreciate you.
