The Warren County Board of Education recently approved several leadership hires:

• Chief Academic Officer: Kisha Clemons (approved on 8/8/23)
• Chief Operations Officer: Dr. Dennis Carrington (approved on 8/8/23)
• Director of School Performance: LaTonya McNeill (approved on 7/25/23)
• Warren County High School Principal: Dr. Cynthia Simons (approved on 8/8/23)

Dr. Simons will be continuing the work started by WCHS Interim Principal Elaine Hanzer. As a retired school administrator, Ms. Hanzer has worked the maximum amount allowed by the state while receiving retirement benefits. Her last day will be August 31.

“These highly qualified educational leaders will help continue our critical mission of improving Warren County Schools, how we educate and support our students, how we empower our staff, and how we connect with our community. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) announced today that more than two dozen school districts across North Carolina will share nearly $400 million in new state lottery-funded grant awards for school construction, renovation projects and other capital improvements. Of that amount, Warren County Schools were awarded $24 million to use towards the creation of a new elementary school.

The grants, awarded under the Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund, represent the largest annual allocation under the program, created by the General Assembly in 2017 from state lottery revenues. The grants are in addition to the state’s lottery-supported Public School Building Capital Fund, from which all districts receive an allocation each year.

Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery, said support for school construction has been part of the lottery since it started in 2006.

“These grants announced today by state school Superintendent Catherine Truitt represent the latest and largest investment of those monies so far,” Michalko said. “Our state Department of Public Instruction, working in partnership with counties all across our state, is putting this money to work for a great cause. We look forward to seeing all these new schools opening soon.”

As a small, economically disadvantaged, rural community, it’s nearly impossible for us to secure that much funding on our own to invest in creating inviting schools designed to meet existing technology demands and educational best practices. DPI notified Warren County Schools last week that they were awarded the grant.

At press time, there’s no timeline for the project.

The Warren County Board of Education unanimously voted to hire Keith Sutton as Superintendent. His new contract runs from January 1, 2022 – June 30, 2025. Mr. Sutton has been serving as Interim Superintendent since July 1 and will continue in that role through the end of the year, when he becomes Superintendent.

“Mr. Sutton has done an excellent job over the past four and a half months in Warren County, making recommendations and decisions that have significantly impacted our students and staff for the better,” said Board of Education Chair Jennifer Sims. “With his long standing track record of educational service and advocacy, we’re excited to have Mr. Sutton’s leadership and experience working to benefit our families and the Warren County community.”

“I feel like my years of working as an education consultant, advocate, legislative liaison, community organizer, and policy maker, in addition to my years of service as a member of the Wake County Board of Education, have all led me to this moment and this opportunity in Warren County,” Sutton said. “Warren County Schools has a great team that I’m honored to work with every day and we have promising students, eager to learn. Together, we’ll work to ensure our students and staff have access to the resources they need to effectively teach and learn. When teachers and students are successful, our entire community benefits, making it that much easier for future teachers and students to build on that success.”
