Please come see this wonderful historic adventure! Whether you are an avid snowmobile fan, polar expedition enthusiast, history buff, or just curious, see the film on the large screen and enjoy the concessions of LCAC! After the film, I will be available to try to answer questions and show you personal memorabilia from the expedition that was my father’s.

some back story:

My dad, Jean-Luc Bombardier with the Plaisted Polar Expedition made the trek to the north pole on Bombardier Skidoos reaching 90° N on April 19, 1968.

1st to reach the pole, congratulations to Jerry Pitzl, Ernst Michel, John Moriarty, and those who have passed: Jean-Luc Bombardier, Ralph Plaisted, Walt Pederson, Art Aufderheide, Don Powellek, Weldy Phipps, Col Andy Horton, George Cavouras, Bumps Woolsey.

After an unsuccessful, but fantastic attempt in 1967,(covered by CBS journalist Charles Kuralt and written in his book https://www.amazon.com/Top-World-Adventures-Misadventures-Expedition/dp/B0006BU5NA), this time starting earlier and at Canada’s Ward Hunt Island on Ellesmere Island, Plaisted began the 412 miles traverse on March 8, and successfully reached the pole 90°N on April 19, 1968, confirmed by the USAF on April 20).

Confirmation by National Geographic that the Plaisted Polar Expedition of 1968 was the first to travel across the surface to the north pole was HUGE. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082XLHP8G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_trfxEbDXPC8ZT?fbclid=IwAR0Vtb5wU_Z98n_3QeIrpixEWkNj1rrWuK_0X_Sfu0vomyf5XGxnvUvHi24
another great article featuring Jerry Pitzl: https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/last-of-the-ice-party-that-made-it-to-the-pole-marks-milestone/article_d67a1715-c671-51af-ae7f-15cef20024ec.html

we always knew this, but now the world can too. changing the history books will be another project. a fun article here: https://artfulliving.com/plaisted-polar-expedition-north-pole-adventure-travel/

Join Preservation NC and Patrick Brown (Hempfinity) to talk about the past, present, and future of Oakley Grove Plantation (Littleton, Warren County), a property protected by protected covenants held by Preservation NC. Oakley Grove Plantation was built during the 1700s by former slaves and descendants of Dr. Lafayette Browne and Mary Ann Falcon Browne. At one point, Oakley Grove had 175 enslaved people who were forced to work the plantation’s 7,000 acres. One of those enslaved was Byron C. Brown, who ran away from the plantation at the end of the civil war at age 14.

Patrick, the Great Grandson of Bryon C. Brown, purchased Oakley Grove in May of 2021 and now owns the plantation that his great-grandfather once helped build and manage. Learn more about the Brown legacy at Oakley Grove and the future Patrick and his family are building at the site through Industrial Hemp farming and plans for Agritourism in honor of all the enslaved families that once lived there.

Registration is FREE, but required.

A remarkable event will occur in Warrenton, North Carolina at the corner of West Franklin and Haley Streets on October 26, 2022 at 2:00 PM. You are cordially invited to attend the unveiling and dedication of the Dr. L. Julian Haywood Historical Marker.

He was a Distinguished Alumnus of Hampton University and Howard University and received career and achievement awards from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and American College of Physicians. Dr. Haywood conducted pioneering cardiovascular research, developed the first digital heart rhythm monitor, and established the coronary care unit at the Los Angeles County Hospital-USC Medical Center which was renamed for him in 2016. Also, Dr. Haywood helped to establish and led the Sickle Cell Anemia Research Foundation and was a founding member of the Association of Black Cardiologists.

There is no way that this marker can address all of his accomplishments in the medical field. However, this is our way of showing respect and gratitude for his research in cardiology, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and sickle cell anemia.

We invite you to be present for the unveiling and dedication of this marker. A reception will follow the ceremony at the Warrenton Rural Fire Department on South Main Street.

Kindly RVSP to the address above or via email to jafranklin1@embarqmail.com no later than October 19th.
