On February 27 at 6:00 pm, join North Carolina Humanities for an interactive panel discussion examining themes from the North Carolina Reads selection “Beyond Innocence: The Life Sentence of Darryl Hunt.”

This panel will explore how a young Black man was falsely accused of murdering a white woman in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and sentenced to life in prison, where he spent 19 years behind bars before his tireless attorneys were able to prove his innocence.

Part true crime drama, part chronicle of a remarkable life cut short by systematic prejudice, Zerwick’s narrative powerfully illuminates the sustained catastrophe faced by an innocent person in prison and the difficulty all formerly incarcerated people face when they try to restart their lives.

This event features author Phoebe Zerwick and Mark Rabil in a conversation moderated by Dr. Mike Wakeford.

Pauli Murray: A Personal and Political Life by Troy R. Saxby

In this intimate biography, Troy Saxby provides the most comprehensive account of Murray’s inner life to date, revealing her struggles in poignant detail and deepening our understanding and admiration of her numerous achievements in the face of pronounced racism, homophobia, transphobia, and political persecution. Even As We Breathe by Annette Clapsaddle

Even As We Breathe invokes the elements of bone, blood, and flesh as Cowney navigates difficult social, cultural, and ethnic divides. After leaving the seclusion of the Cherokee reservation, he is able to explore a future free from the consequences of his family’s choices and to construct a new worldview, for a time. However, prejudice and persecution in the white world of the resort eventually compel Cowney to free himself from larger forces that hold him back as he struggles to unearth evidence of his innocence and clear his name.
