Eaton Ferry Town Hall Meeting on Reinternment Efforts of Exhumed Enslaved Individuals
The Eaton Ferry Working Group in collaboration with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Research Labs of Archaeology are pleased to announce a town hall meeting to provide an update on the ongoing efforts to respectfully reintern the remains of 17 enslaved individuals. These remains were exhumed during the construction of Lake Gaston near the Eaton Ferry Bridge, and the committee has been working diligently to ensure they are given a proper and dignified resting place.
The town hall meeting will take place on July 30, 2024, at 6:30 PM at the Warren County Memorial Library Community Room. All community members are invited and encouraged to attend.
During the meeting, representatives from the group and UNC staff will present the progress made thus far, share insights from historical and archaeological research, and discuss the next steps in the reinternment process.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on this important initiative.
“This project is not only about providing a respectful burial for these individuals but also about acknowledging and honoring their lives and contributions to our community,” said Dr. Cosmos George, President of the Warren County Chapter of the NAACP. “We are committed to ensuring that their stories are remembered and that they are given the dignity they deserve.”
